Maddison Moren, Year 10, was successful in being chosen to participate in the 2023 STEM Power Girl Program and recently attended a week long camp in Brisbane in May.
“At the STEM Girl Power Camp, I gained invaluable knowledge and experience of what STEM is and can be outside of a high school classroom setting. The camp involved 60 girls from around the state who all had a likeminded interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and an interest in what it can do for our future careers. I had the opportunity to visit universities such as the University of Queensland, QUT, and Griffith University where we met and learnt from STEM students and professionals through hands on activities in science labs, lectures, and workshops. I got to network with professionals and lecturers personally, and cover topics from math to palaeontology. The balance of practical to theoretical, and the variety of topics made this opportunity so interesting and unique. The highlight was visiting the Translational Research Institute and working with live cancer cells among biomedical researchers. I would definitely recommend the STEM Girl Power Initiative to any girls interested in what the STEM field could look like for them.“
