The aim of Senior Secondary at Maroochydore State High School is for each student to achieve a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), through completion of either a Tertiary or Vocational Pathway.
Year 10
Year 10 is the transition or first year of the senior curriculum and provides the foundation for Years 11 and 12. The Senior Secondary Year 10 curriculum is a "bridge" between the Junior Secondary curriculum of Years 7, 8 and 9 and Years 11 and 12. It builds on concepts and skills that provide a foundation for the corresponding senior syllabus. There is a focus on developing the skills needed for success in Year 11 and 12 along with the academic rigour required for successful entry to some Year 11 and 12 subjects. Students in Year 10 study English, Maths, Science, Humanities & Social Sciences (History and Geography) and select two optional subjects. In Semester 2, students can change their Science and Humanities subjects with the option of choosing specific subjects designed to transition into year 11 and 12 subjects.
In Year 10, students undertake a Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan Interview to finalise their subject selections and their learning plans for year 11 and 12. These conversations help students to make important decisions about their future education, training and employment.
Year 11 and 12
After
completing Year 10, students choose from a broader range of learning options
that may lead to one or more of the following:
Students in Year 11 select six subjects that they will generally study for two years; every student must study English and Mathematics and select four other subjects. Subjects are organised into groupings that facilitate a university pathway, a tertiary options pathway or an employment pathway. For most tertiary-oriented subjects, students must meet strict prerequisites in their Year 10 results; these are outlined in the Yr 11-12 Curriculum Book. For students who are studying Year 11 in 2025, please refer to the Yr 11 2025 Curriculum Booklet as there are some changes to the curriculum.
New Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system
The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is Queensland's senior school qualification, which is awarded to eligible students, usually at the end of Year 12.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) has replaced the Overall Position (OP) as the standard pathway to tertiary study for Queensland Year 12s.
