Our chaplain
Adam Rose (School Chappy) is a qualified Social Worker and is a safe person for young people to connect with at school. He can provide a listening ear and connect young people with the best support to help them reach their potential. Working with other members of the school’s support team, the chaplain cares for students struggling with issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown, and depression. The Chaplaincy Service is available to everyone in the school community regardless of their beliefs.
Adam has been working as the school Chappy for 7 years now and he works with students, parents and the local community within the 3 key areas outlined below.
Young people and family support
The Chaplaincy service is available for students, parents and teachers in a pastoral setting to work through any issues. This most of the time leads to individuals being connected to the right person in the school who then can support the person in the best manner.
For the last 6 years the school Chappy has been facilitating 3 therapeutic adventure programs:
- PEP (Personal Empowerment program) which supports junior female student that are looking to develop their confidence and self-esteem.
- Rock and Water which aims to develop a greater self-awareness and focus with students struggling with class behaviour.
- The Jig-Saw program that engages grade junior students in a creative charity enterprise involving up-cycling.
Finally, the Chaplaincy service has a small food pantry program that can provide lunches for students, food hampers for families and sometime small amounts of financial support.
Building positive community
The Chaplaincy program facilitates a range of ongoing community activities. These include activities such as: The Great Chappy Choc Battle, Mobile Phone recycling, Spin Off, Sleep on a Cardboard box night, Going the Distance (7000 km school cycling race), Chappy Café, Mother’s day Pamper evening, Ricochet (clothes recycling), Father’s day Laser Zone, Murder Mystery Nights, Busking Clubs, Mighty Minions (creative charity group) and a number of others.
Adam also participates in several school camps during the year supporting the camp programs with his experience in outdoor education. He also is a part of the basketball coaching team, coaching the senior basketball team to the grand final for the past two years.
Leadership and development
Adam is involved in supporting a number of leadership activities in the school.
LEOs (Junior Lions): year 10 -11 leadership group which works in partnership with the Mooloolaba Lions Club. The LEOs focus is on supporting the school, local and international community which provides them opportunities to create and manage a number of the community projects.
Chaplaincy Committee: student Chaplaincy Committee (years 7 – 9), supporting the development of a number of activities that promote positive community and raise funds for the Chaplaincy service.
Local Chaplaincy Committee (LCC): the Local Chaplaincy Committee is made up of parent, teachers and community members with the purpose of supporting student projects and developing and executing a sustainability plan. Chaplaincy Services are predominately community funded and need all the support they can mobilise from their local community.
Year 7 Peer leader training: over the last 5 years that provides our junior school leaders with counselling skills that they can use to support their peers and then direct them to the school based support networks.
USC Social Work placement Unit: There can be up to an extra 4 fulltime staff of social work students completing the 500 hour placement. These university students build the capacity of the Chaplaincy service to provide even greater support and leadership mentoring in our school community.
