Thursday 28th May marked National Public Education Day, celebrating the vital role public schools, preschools and TAFE institutes play in strengthening the social, economic and cultural fabric of our society.
To mark the occasion, the Australian Education Union launched Class Acts, a national television series highlighting the power of public education. The series premiered at a special event in Canberra and shares the personal stories of high-profile Australians, exploring how public education has shaped their lives.
We’re proud to share that our very own teacher Meryl McCulloch was personally invited to attend the event, as she features prominently in the documentary.
Australian business journalist and news anchor Cheng Lei spent over three harrowing years in a Beijing prison after being falsely accused of espionage. During her imprisonment, Lei was known by her fellow inmates as “teacher”. In those dark days, she drew on the inspiration of her Year 12 teachers at Indooroopilly SHS, John Brew (English) and Meryl McCulloch (Art). Lei returns to Indooroopilly High after 35 years, and sees both John and Meryl again for the first time. The inspiring conversation with former student - now Australian business journalist and news anchor Cheng Lei is available (soon) to view
here.
Congratulations to Meryl!
