WHOLE SCHOOL LITERACY IN CONTEXT

7/05/2014
The Term Two Literacy in Context program commenced (Week 2) 28 April. The focus is on paragraph and sentence structure, and in particular focussing on the use of capitals, full stops and punctuation tools. In Week 1, a selection of Year 9 students were invited to a Writing Task Presentation.  In this talk, they heard about the marking scheme for NAPLAN. This week's focus is critical as Punctuation is worth five marks in the task.

Teachers in all Junior classrooms across the school every day and every lesson will  revisit and  reinforce the use of boundary punctuation, capital letters at the start of sentences and full stops at the end of sentences while  addressing common errors in sentence construction. These skills are critical to the performance on the National Literacy Test, but also for student performance in written tasks across their assessment at school.

Let’s eat Grandma.  Let’s eat, Grandma…………. Grandma  knows only too well, the difference the hamburger paragraphing structure and sentence punctuation can make to saving a life.
