New Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance System (SATE)

Information for Parents - Year 11 2019

The Queensland Government will introduce new senior assessment and tertiary entrance (SATE) systems with Year 11 students in 2019. Key changes will include the

• Introduction of common external assessment across Queensland for individual subjects at the end of Year 12 Introduction of common external assessment across Queensland for individual subjects at the end of Year 12

• Replacement of the Overall Position (OP) with the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

• Strengthening of the quality and comparability of school based assessment

These changes will help to strengthen the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), equip school leavers with the 21st century skills they need to succeed in work and life and ensure school leavers are innovators, entrepreneurs, valued employees, life-long learners and responsible global citizens.

We are getting ready for SATE -Transitional Year 10 subjects
As part of our preparations to get students ready for the new senior system, Year 10 students now have the option to select transitional subjects in the areas of Science and Humanities. These subjects will give students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the content, assessment and thinking skills required for subjects they may like to study in Year 11. Students need to make these selections via their OneSchool login.

Do students have to pick a new Science or Humanities subject?
No. Students are able to continue studying their current Science and Humanities courses, which are general in nature and prepare students for vocational subjects in Year 11, the armed forces, traineeships and apprenticeships. Classroom teachers however may change to accommodate the new subject selections.

Note: There will be no changes to English, Mathematics or elective subjects. If students would like a subject change, they will need to collect a Subject Change Form from the Office as per our normal school process.

Other ways MSHS is getting ready for SATE

• New senior syllabuses will begin in 2019. This means some subjects will be renamed, others combined and new ones have been developed. More information regarding Year 11 subject selections will be released during Term 3 2018.
• Staff have engaged in and will continue to participate in professional development to ensure they have an in-depth understanding of new senior syllabus content and assessment.
• Year 10 curriculum and assessment has been redesigned this year to support the transition. For example, students will continue to participate in exam block style assessment in Week 10 each term to mirror the move to external assessments in 2020.

Selection of Year 11 subjects for 2019:
During Term 3, all students and parents will be required to attend Year 11 subject selection interviews with staff to assist students to develop their Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan). These interviews will be held on 30th and 31st August 2018.

SATE Information nights to explain the new QCE, ATAR system and subject selection information will be held in Term 3 on Wednesday 251h July and Wednesday 151h August (6pm-6:45pm) in the school lecture theatre (F12).
